That Awkward Moment When You're Wrong - A Science Rage.

I've mentioned my Baptist/Mennonite/That Christian Sect friends. I have a new one. I'll spare her her name being mentioned, but basically, she believes in that Catholic method of contraception, when you use the woman's "natural cycle" to avoid pregnancy. She also speaks in "thees" and "thys" and "thous", which is irritating, because she doesn't know old English grammar. Quakers, I don't care about your religion, but I do care about how you use English - and "thees" and "thous" weren't used always, in every case, in place of "you" and its variants. Please do try Shakespeare. You can learn a lot.

Back to the contraception thing.

This doesn't fucking work.

I asked if she knew anything about the reproductive system. "You don't get to 40 without knowing how your body works." Clearly, you don't have a clue.

Quick SCIENCE! lesson, here.

WARNING: SCIENCE

So, humans are simians. That lumps us in with all kinds of apes and monkeys (and lemurs are 'pre-simian', which means they're the equivalent of what we evolved from. I wish I was a lemur), and also means we're a bit weird.

Firstly, simians are one of the few species where the babies stay in the family group for a relatively ridiculous amount of time for their average life span. Secondly, many of the great apes have "heat" all year around (by which I mean most go into periods of fertility every so often, all year). Humans are a nearly unique in that we can have babies all the time.

Many teenagers (and, unfortunately, adults) have the misconception that you can't get pregnant on your period. Fun fact, you can. It's rare, yes, but there is literally no time in the cycle that women can't, however slim the chances, conceive. That "natural cycle" thing? It's bullshit, along with men having one less rib than women.

They are both ridiculous facts that people believe despite it being bullshit. And people can say "oh it works for me!" and, funny thing, condoms work better.

So, you HATE abortions, too? Jesus hates abortions? Cool. Hey, you know what? Don't get one. If you are so against abortions, try to promote a contraceptive that works. And as a note? No one is saying "go have an abortion! Abortions are great!" because they aren't. They are gruesome and horrible, but in many cases where they are performed, they are necessary. Go ahead and be against them all you like, but you're trying to take a right away from someone. What's that, you're going to die if you don't abort your child? Too bad. What's that? Your unborn child has a disease that would cause its extremely short life to be horrible and full of pain? You can't take away that baby's right to live! It's a baby!

It's funny, too, because most people who are anti-abortion are pro-death-penalty, and anti-welfare. How do you justify this? "It's okay to murder people so long as they've done something." And funny thing, many women who are raped, are in the low-income end. And some of them get pregnant. Take away their right to abort? Because it's "not the baby's fault"? Yeah. Okay. It's not. But the woman would suffer such pain for the rest of her life with that reminder of pain.

It just doesn't make sense to me. Use condoms, play it safe, and keep your options open. If you really loved these people as you so claimed, that's what you would tell them.

"I like your Christ, but I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." -Ghandi.

I think what's worse than their natural planning method of birth control is their abstinence only sex-ed.

They act like you can scare kids into not having sex. And then they won't. So they won't get pregnant.

Guess what? It's been proven that it doesn't work.

So they're aren't teaching kids how to prevent pregnacy. But then they act like it's this problem. Then they don't want to give the kids an abortion. Because it's /their/ fault. Which it is, but you can't expect them to know any better.

So yeah, that was longer than I intended.

I like that Ghandi quote. I pretty much feel the same way.

I hate to say this and sound annoying, but I can't stand not to. What you're referring to, the "thee"s and "thou"s aren't Old English.
Example of old English (anglo-saxon):
Fæder ure þu þe eart on heofonum;
Si þin nama gehalgod
to becume þin rice
gewurþe ðin willa

Old English was mostly used from AD 450 to 1100, and is a combination of the Germanic based languages of Old Norse and Old Frisian, and Latin.

I was refering to it as "old English" to simply point out that it isn't modern English - since it's not Elizabethan/Shakespearean or any other type. They call it "plain speaking". I quite honestly called it "poor", and yes, I do know exactly what you mean, and I'm sorry for my lack of definition. In saying that, you knew exactly what I meant, too, but Rachel, you and I are too alike for me not to forgive you anyway.

Ashlee, what really gets on MY nerves is that one of the arguments is literally "that's my grandchild". Congratu-FUCKING-lations, lady, because you're too old to have your own babies, you're obsessing over someone else's. I'm not going to have an abortion unless I have to, but that doesn't mean there isn't 53823456286584569245 reasons that other people have that right I have chosen not to take up.

What we have here, is a failure to realise that "i don't like it so no one can have it" isn't an acceptable way to make laws.

Blech. Abstinence-only sex ed .. brings back memories, huh?

The phrase "if you practice sexual abstinence .." is such a contradiction, yet my health teacher got away with it. TECHNICALLY, my state isn't abstinence-based when it comes to health/sex ed, but .. yeah ..
